What can you do if your exam program needs new items authored on a short time-line? Rely on Essentials! to help.

MapNot all project plans have enough time or budget to get subject matter experts together in one location to conduct an item writing and review workshop. The next best thing is to organize a remote item writing and review campaign. If you use computer applications that are widely available and familiar to most people in the work force, like web browsers, you can meet the program goals without requiring that the SMEs travel and without causing them to be inconvenienced by the process.

Give the SMEs documentation about how to write an item that fulfills the requirements of the program. Share information about the program’s job task analysis, blueprint and item specifications. Remember that remote writers need ready access to documents, so you may want to use an on-line sharing service for documents that are sensitive.

Coach the SMEs on item writing basics. Giving your experts information on how to construct a good item is paramount. Conduct a webinar, provide a handout, or give examples with an instructional quiz. Engaging the SMEs to think about how candidates perceive test items is a great start. Remember that the SME group is providing expertise on the subject that you are testing. They are not experts in testing, so they need direction from a test development professional.

Use the Strasz Assessment Management Essentials! module to provide the item writers with a method to write that is secure, allows remote access, and is interactive. The secure interface for SMEs is presented on their choice of web browser, which adds to the comfort level with the technology being used for writing. If they can access the internet, they can access the project. Essentials! guides the SMEs through the item writing assignments the project leader gives them. In Essentials! you can assign mentors to the SMEs which allows them to interact with people who understand the program needs.

When it is time for the next step, The Essentials! module lets the project leader control an item review campaign with a remote group of SMEs, as well. If the SMEs have an internet connection, they can work in the Item Authoring and Review Portal regardless of location or time zone. SMEs can edit and approve or reject assigned items from the campaign to ensure that the campaign results in operational items for the exam program.

Using Essentials! allows a test developer to lead a group of far flung SMEs in a collaborative project to efficiently produce operational test items.
